QPS and Beef Australia partner to promote road safety in regional and rural Australia

The Queensland Police Service has teamed up with Beef Australia to promote road safety in regional Queensland to launch two high visibility Highway Patrol Kia Stingers.

Central Police Region Acting Assistant Commissioner Glen Pointing stated, “despite fewer than a third of Australia’s population residing outside major cities, almost two thirds of all road deaths occur on rural and regional roads.  Excessive speed, unpreparedness and fatigue all contribute to increased impacts associated with crashes on our rural and regional roads.”

Reflecting on the 36 people who lost their lives from road crashes in Central Region in 2023, Acting Assistant Commissioner Pointing reminded the community that “each of these deaths represent somebody’s family member and each of these family members will be dearly missed by their loved ones on special occasions such as Mothers Days, Fathers Days, birthdays and at Christmas.”

Chief Executive Officer of Beef Australia Simon Irwin stated that “Beef Australia proudly stands alongside the Queensland Police Service in their unwavering commitment to promoting road safety in regional Queensland. Every effort made to protect lives on our country roads is a testament to our collective responsibility. Let’s join hands to ensure safer journeys, preserving precious lives and cherished moments for all families.”

All road users are encouraged to get involved to help make a significant reduction in road trauma on country roads.  According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation:

  • Over half (51%) of Australian drivers openly admit to breaking road rules when travelling on rural roads.
  • Almost two thirds (58%) of drivers take a trip on a regional road each month.
  • One in ten drivers (10%) have experience terrifying moments of microsleep, where they were awake but unable to recall driving.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Pointing emphasised that the aim of the partnership with Beef Australia is to prevent serious injury and fatal road crashes on regional and rural roads.  “Road safety is everybody’s responsibility.  I remind everybody that every decision you make when you’re behind the wheel counts and can have lasting consequences.  Help us beef up road safety on regional and rural roads, respect the road and the other drivers you share it with.”
