Limousin Champions announced at Beef2024

Veteran judge David Bondfield said he’s spent a lifetime trying to breed the sorts of bulls on show in the Limousin class at the Nutrien Ag Solutions Stud Cattle Championship at Beef2024.

Oakwood Cutright, owned by Lindesay View Limousins, Ulster Limousin Stud and Red Oak Limousin, won grand champion Limousin male and was the top weight in the competition at 1040kg with 143 square centimetres of eye muscle.

Mr Bondfield, the co-founder of Palgrove Pastoral Co., appreciated all three male division champions for their natural performance.

“The senior bull is a massive individual and he carries that weight easily,” Mr Bondfield said of Oakwood Cutright.

“These bulls have also got that extra bit of softness, which the industry needs and the consumer wants.

“To be profitable they’ve got to be high yielding but they’ve got to have some fat and flavour to go with that, so these are the types of industry bulls that will do that in spades.”

Mr Bondfield was also full of praise for the female division champions.

“We are looking for outstanding individuals and we definitely have found three of those here today,” he said.

“Our calf champion heifer is just 14 months but I just really like the mellowness and the way she stands so naturally, so balanced, as long as a train, and deep-sided.

“The second heifer is really special because you could take the halter off and she would stand like that all day – beautiful shoulder design, length of body, strength of loin, teat size and placement – she will make an awesome cow.

“The two-year-old cow with a baby calf – same deal; really long-fronted, lots of extension, but she hasn’t lost any constitutional capacity. She’s a got a great udder that will stay together for whole of life. Really nice feet and legs and moves really freely.

“It’s a tough decision but today I’m going to lean towards our red cow-calf pair as our grand champion.”
