The Beef Australia 2012 Education Program has prepared an exciting series of activities for school students.

Primary students have the chance to enter art, media and poetry competitions, while educational tours are on offer to school groups, and a number of sites are especially suited to interaction with students.

In preparing the Schools Program, Beef Australia 2012 has worked closely with teachers to ensure that the competitions and activities fit within the school programme and syllabus.

Art, Media and Poetry Competitions

Entries in the art, media and poetry competitions listed below close on Friday, April 20Please complete the forms provided below. Poetry entries can be emailed to Elva Cupo.

All categories below have prize money attached of 1st Prize $50, 2nd Prize $30, 3rd Prize $20, with the exception of the following sponsored categories:

  • The Years 1-3 and Years 4-7 Poetry Competition, sponsored by Elders Insurance Company with 1st Prize $50, 2nd Prize $30, and 3rd Prize $20;
  • The Primary School Photographic Competition for Years 5-7, sponsored by Fairholme College Toowoomba, with 1st Prize $100, 2nd Prize $50, and 3rd Prize $25.

Entries can be collected after the conclusion of the Beef Australia 2012 by contacting the Beef Australia office on 07 4922 2989.

Primary School Design Competition

YEARS Prep - 2

Students who wish to explore their creativity are invited to participate in the Beef Australia 2012 ‘Dress up Your Bull' competition.

The Years Prep - 2 entry form is available here and an image of bull can be downloaded here.

The entry should be an individual submission.  Artwork should be framed with a paper frame for display at Beef Australia 2012.

Artwork size is to be no larger than A4 excluding frame.

Task:

  • To decorate the image of the bull as creatively and artistically as possible; and
  • Colouring should be done with any one or a combination of: pencils, crayons, felt tip pens, paint or water colour, collage, paper mosaic or mixed media

Judging criteria:

  • Presentation
  • Creativity
  • The Judges decision will be final.

Primary School Redesign Competition

YEARS 3-4

Students in this bracket can explore their creativity by participating in the Beef Australia 2012 ‘Reinvent Your Bull' competition.

Years 3-4 students can find an entry form available here and an image of a bull here.

The entry should be an individual submission. Artwork should be framed with a paper frame for display at Beef Australia.

Artwork size is to be no larger than A4 excluding frame.

Task:

  • To redesign, re create or decorate the bull as creatively and artistically as possible.
  • Colouring should be done with any one or a combination of: use all or part of the image; the image can be used on its own or incorporated into another image/artwork; image can be reduced in size or sections enlarged; collage, paper mosaic; cut, tear, rearrange; mixed media; pencils; crayons; felt tip pens; paint or water colour

Judging Criteria:

  • Presentation
  • Creativity
  • The Judges decision will be final.

Poetry Competition 

Sponsored by Elders Insurance Company

Theme:  Any Aspect of the Beef Industry

Task:  Create a rhyming poem on an aspect of the Beef industry

Category 1: Years 1-3  Rhyming poem of 4 lines

Category 2 Years 4-7  Rhyming poem of 6-8 lines

Conditions of entry:

  • The original verse must have good rhyme and metre.
  • Entries should be typed where possible.
  • Cover sheets should be used. Entrants’ names or other details must not appear on the poems presented for the competition.

Judging Criteria:

  • Presentation
  • Creativity
  • The Judges decision will be final.

A selection of poems will be read each day by a professional poet at the Poetry Corner in our CQUniversity Kids Space.

Animation Competition

YEARS 4-7

Year 4-7 students can demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the beef industry by creating an animation or PowerPoint presentation that reflects the Beef Australia 2012 theme, “Innovation, Collaboration, Inspiration, Celebration".

An example of an Animation or PowerPoint on this topic could involve:

  • Looking at the future environmental impact and factors, eg. How to capture methane and convert to energy; petrol-free lawnmower;
  • Catchment care
  • Sustainability
  • Technological influences,
  • Explore the nature of cattle and their value to us
  • Nutritional issues

The presentation should use all animation or PowerPoint skills.

Conditions of Entry:

  • Entries should be no longer than 1minute in length. Please submit entries on CD/ DVD/ Memory stick
  • Any form of animation may be used eg. Stop motion, Flash, Kahootz, Marvin
  • Entries can be created as a group or as an individual – only 1 prize will be awarded regardless of number in a group
  • Files must be saved in Quick Time or PC compatible format
  • Entries must show proficient use of language, vocabulary and punctuation skills.

Judging Criteria

  • Have you shown how beef production impacts in the future?
  • Have you been creative & entertaining?
  • Have you developed an entertaining presentation that captures the audience’s attention?

Primary School Photographic Competition

YEARS 5–7, sponsored by Fairholme College Toowoomba

Topic: Frame Me

What’s your Angle?  Creatively capture a view, an aspect of cattle, farming, or beef product.  The image can be altered using a paint or photoshop program.

Conditions:

  • Size must be no larger than one A4 sheet
  • The photograph must be the entrants’ own.
  • Photographs can be all black and white or all colour.
  • The subject title is required to feature the photo name.
  • Cover sheets should be used. Entrants’ names or other details must not appear on the photography presented for the competition.
  • Strictly one entry per student.

Judging Criteria:

  • Presentation
  • Creativity
  • Composition
  • The Judges decision will be final.
