Education has always been a major pillar of Beef Australia’s approach to growing the national industry and our program for 2015 will feature a number of new initiatives in this area.
One of the most exciting new elements is the Graeme Acton Beef Connections program, which we believe will support the acquisition and retention of talented young people in the beef industry.
Supported by Westpac Agribusiness, the mentoring program is a unique opportunity for young beef industry participants to tap the experience of an industry leader who will help guide them in the pursuit of their goals.
The program is not just for young producers – it is open to 25-35 year olds working in any aspect of the beef industry, including production, processing, marketing, and agribusiness. They will be paired with a mentor who has proven leadership skills in agricultural industry.
It was only fitting that we named the program in honour of the late Graeme Acton – I know from my own experience how generous Graeme was when it came to sharing his extensive knowledge and supporting others in pursuing their goals.
Through Beef Connections young beef industry members will become more effective in their current roles and will develop new skills to prepare them for future leadership positions.
Successful applicants will participate in a three-day personal development workshop to be held in February 2015. There they will develop a project idea to be worked on with the support of their mentor. Participants will also have access to monthly webinars and one-on-one follow-up sessions.
It is hoped this relationship between mentor and protégé will grow over time so that the advice and guidance is available to the young producer for many years to come.
I strongly encourage all promising young beef industry participants to apply before the October 6 deadline to be part of the Beef Connections program – don’t wait another three years for the chance to pursue your dreams!
