There’s no greater feeling than succeeding in difficult circumstances, and as every cattleman in Queensland knows, this hasn’t been the easiest of seasons.
Which is why success will taste even sweeter for the winners of the Beef Australia 2015 Ruralco Commercial Cattle Challenge.
Nominations for the competition close on Monday March 30, so if you haven’t already entered your cattle now is the time to act!
The competition is open to both grain and grassfed commercial cattle in pens of 10-12 head, which will be judged against real-world, commercial market specifications.
In what I believe is a great change to the Beef Australia schedule, the commercial cattle will this year be judged on Sunday May 3 at CQLX Gracemere, before being sold at 9am Monday May 4 by the teams at Elders, Landmark and Savage Barker & Backhouse.
The winners will then be formally recognised at an awards dinner to be held at Hegvold Stadium at the Rockhampton Showgrounds that evening.
This timing will free up commercial cattle producers to be more involved in other elements of Beef Australia, including the ANZ National Carcase Competition Awards Dinner on Tuesday May 5, and the Landmark Stud Cattle Championships which run from Tuesday through to Thursday May 7.
In 2012 the Ruralco Commercial Cattle Championships drew close to 2000 entries making it the biggest event of its kind in Australia. It’s a unique opportunity to test your skills against the best cattle from around Australia and gain constructive feedback from our team of experienced judges, Kirt Wockner, of Oakey Beef, and Beau Surawski, of Teys Rockhampton.
And although industry has had to deal with everything from extreme drought through to floods and cyclones over recent months, I am confident in the skills of our producers to continue to turn off top-quality cattle which meet the specifications set by our commercial markets.
